Though there is much debate about slot machine casinos
operating in Bethlehem, the council has upheld their right. But that doesn’t
mean that the slot machine protesters aren’t still fighting the slot machine
developments.
Protestors have overwhelmed city officials with their often religious
protests—and they don’t stop at city council, protestors have even brought
the slot machine issue to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. A few of
the citizens of Bethlehem are downright outraged—and others are sadly
resigned. All protestors agree that adding slot machines will change
Bethlehem from a charming place to raise a family to a city plagued with
crime and gambling related issues.
But despite these protests that have been going on for years, the council
and the Mayor insist that slot machines and gambling in Bethlehem will only
bring jobs and prosperity to the city. The city stresses that they
economic possibilities will outweigh the potentially negative perceptions
citizens have.
