Slot Machines Expand in California

Under the leadership of Governor Schwarzenegger, it looks like more reservations in California will have the ability to increase their number of operating slot machines. Caps on the number of slot machines possible on Indian reservations are currently under debate and revisions to past caps on slot machines are currently before the Legislature.

In the past, slot machines were voted legal for the purpose of aiding the lower income earning tribes. This no longer appears to be the focus of the slot machine and casino industry as many wealthy tribes are looking forward to the slot machine expansions. With as many as 20,000 slots due as part of the tribal expansion, the legislature has a lot to consider.

Part of the intense debate centers on the fact that these new slot machine deals will mean less money for the state. Basically, if the slot machine expansion occurs the 25% the state receives will be significantly less than 25% until each of the tribes reaches their maximum slot machine capacity—something that could take years.
