California Slots Could Overshadow Vegas

The Democratic party in California has already said no to Gov. Schwarzenegger's proposal to add 20,000 new slot machines to California Indian reservations, but now Republican leaders are demanding that the Democrats revisit the governor’s tribal pacts—and it looks like it could happen. This could mean more money into the state’s general fund—and 20,000 more slot machines over the traditional 30 year contract.

Schwarzenegger’s camp is adamant that the slot machine compacts gain approval before the Nov. elections. But the impact of the proposed contract means that the tribes would operate mega slot machine casinos—and by mega we mean over double the number of slot machines allowed in casinos in Las Vegas.

Some current reservations will jump from the current maximum of 2,000 slot machines to operating up to 7,500 slot machines in one casino. The Democratic party claims that it needs more time to examine the proposed deals before the legislature approves it—the Republicans demand they reconvene to make the decision.
