Korea's Slot Machines Grow Too Fast

Korea’s gambling industry has increased exponentially in the last two years—and this does not necessarily mean that everyone is supporting the increase in slot machine and video arcade slot machines in establishments all across Korea. Because of the highly addictive nature of some slot machine arcade games, gambling addictions have increased, as have bankruptcies and suicides.

According to the Korea Game Development and Promotion Institute, the slot machine market has doubled in two years, while the number of new slot machines in Korea increased a relatively small amount.  More Koreans are going to the casinos and and those that are going are spending more money--money they often times don't have.

Many attribute the surges in slot machine gambling to the release of certain video arcade slot machine games. Specifically, the release of the slot machine game “Pada Iyagi” (translated “Sea Story) coincided with a change in the way gift certificates were issued as prizes for slot machine gaming.
