Reform in Jamaica’s Gaming Lounge Industry

In an act to protect consumers, the watchdog group BG&LC (The Betting, Gaming, and Lotteries Commission) has limited the amount of interaction between lounge operators and the slot machine software they operate. Additionally, the Commission is working to enact new payout ratios on the slot machines at these lounges.

The old system for gaming lounges gave the lounge operators complete control over the payout percentages and ratios for the slot machines in their lounge.  That means that the owners could adjust the theoretical payout percentage to work in favor of more profits to them--and that means less money in consumer's pockets.

The Commission audited all of the slot machines with the help of Gaming Laboratories International. The issue originated because the theoretical payout percentage was being altered in slot machines. This percentage determines how much of all of the money played into the slot machine will be used as payout winnings.

With a new system installed in all of the slot machines, the new percentage is 80% for all slot machines in gaming lounges—this is now in direct accordance with the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Act. Though it is not evident that slot machine operators were grossly tampering with the payout percentages, now consumers are protected regardless.
