Slots Hurt Non-Profits

As the slot machine industry expands in Pennsylvania, many non-profits are left wondering how they can compete with gambling to raise funds. Instead of spending extra dollars on donating to non-profit organizations, many are now heading straight to the slot machines. But that leaves the organizations wondering how to capitalize on this slot machine trend while adhering to restrictions like the Small Games of Chance Act.

These concerns have not gone unnoticed though by legislatures—they recognize the problem slot machine expansions have caused, and they plan to revisit the Small Games of Chance Act in the near future. The revised act could allow a broader definition of small games, which would give organizations more opportunities, but what should the non-profits do in the meantime while slot machines continue to expand?

Bide their time and make sure that all fundraising activities are explicitly stated in the Act as it is written now. And while the slot machine industry is allowed to rapidly grow, the non-profits will pray that this Act, which hasn’t been updated since 1988, will be adjusted to adequately support local and state non-profit fundraising efforts.
