The assistant DA in Pennsylvania cites increased crime,
theft, and prostitution as likely results of the Gaming Control Board
granting Dauphin County one of the coveted slot machine licenses. And even
more surprisingly the DA doesn’t expect their share of the slot machine
revenue as adequate payment for increased payroll and processing costs.
If Dauphin County is able to get one of the slot machine licenses
specifically for racetracks, the County is anticipating new jobs across many
areas—more judges, prosecutors, officers and more. This in addition to the
new jobs associated with running the slot machine racetrack—slot technicians
and additional staff. So all in all it looks like the addition of a
slot machine casino could be positive for adding new jobs and revenue back
to the city.
But the the county, and some residents, still have some concerns over this
potential slot machine site. The policy committee hearing will continue as
gaming board officials and officers offer there advice on what to do about
the increase in crime due to the slot machines. Some say that the the DA is
over estimating the anticipated costs, others demand that more money go to
the DA to help fight the crime costs and to ensure that Dauphin County is as
safe after the slot machines as it was before.
