Last week rumors were flying when Governor
Schwarzenegger submitted a proposal to expand the slot machines on
reservations in California. The proposal to bring over 20,000 slot machines
to tribes over the next few years looked on the surface to be out of
character for the Governor. Interestingly,
Democrats said no to the bill because of the lack of provisions.
Previous slot machine expansion proposals included provisions to protect
hotel workers, the current proposal was vetoed because of this difference.
The effect?? Tribes were upset over the veto to the slot machine expansion,
and Gov. Schwarzenegger doesn’t loose the financial contributions of the
tribes.
Basically, the slot machine expansion would not have positively impacted the
money coming in from the tribal casinos; it would have taken years before
the government saw substantial increase in moneys going to the state from the increased number of slot
machines.
