California Residents Blame Casinos

North County residents are divided on what is causing the traffic problems in their town. All of this town debate is heating up as the Pauma Indian tribe plans to partner with the Mashantucket Pequot tribe to build a new multi-million-dollar casino—complete with thousands more slot machines—in North County.

The Mashantucket Pequot tribe developed and operates Foxwoods, reportedly the largest combination resort, hotel and casino all in one facility. With Foxwoods running successfully for years, the tribe has decided to branch out and lend advice and money to other Indian tribes with hopes of creating large slot machine casinos with other amenities.  The Masantucket Pequot tribe will help finance and start up the planned casino in North County. The proposed casino will be built next door to the current facility that currently operates 1,050 slot machines.  The planned facility will add nearly a thousand more slot machines and a more comprehensive gaming area and patron amenities.  The current facility plans to stay open while the proposed casino is built over the next few years—which is a relief to North County slot machine enthusiasts.

And though this sounds great for the tribe, local residents disagree on what exactly is causing the traffic issues—some blame the tribe while acknowledging their right to operate casinos and slot machines, while others just attribute to the effects to a developing city. All residents however, are interested in finding a solution to the traffic problems before the new casino and slot machine facility opens in 2009.  Part of successfully operating the larger slot machine facility will depend upon local support.
