On July 11th, the House of Representatives passed an
antigambling legislation that could make it incredibly difficult for U.S.
Gamblers to carry out transactions online. The government is trying to pass
the Internet Gambling Prohibition and Enforcement Act, which would ban
internet gambling, prohibit online poker sites from knowingly accepting
money from US based customers, and pushes financial institutions to deny
Internet gambling transactions. One of the few things not affected by the
ban is horse racing. And of course, since the ban is internet related,
casinos and slot machines are still ok.
The Bill is an attempt by the government to try and put a halt to illegal
activities as well as gambling addiction. Bill supporters see the passage as
a huge victory against the Internet gambling crowd and feel that this is a
step in the right direction to cleaning the problem of gambling up. The
problem will start when the House starts trying to ban slot machines and
casinos across the country. For now though the internet is the focus:
"Internet gambling is a serious problem that must be stopped, and I believe
the Internet Gambling Prohibition and Enforcement Act will help eliminate
this harmful activity before it spreads further," said bill co-sponsor Bob
Goodlatte, a Republican from Virginia.
PartyGaming, an internet gambling company, said that they were watching the
government actions and were hopeful that they would change their minds. They
feel that the U.K. has already embraced online gambling and that the US
should as well. They feel, as many do, that if Americans want to bet online,
they are going to find a way to do it. Instead of attempting a ban, which
really isn’t going to do much good, they should regulate it and thus get
some of the profits for themselves. And while that's a valid point, it
still seems that slot machines are the safer bet for those who want to
gamble.
