Philadelphia Riverbed Causes Slot Debate

Tacky, eye-sore, and wasteful are just a few of the arguments citizens have against the controversial Philadelphia riverside. With casino companies vying for the right to build a slot machine complex on the riverside, the county held a forum so that all parties affected could air any of the issues they foresee in the design of the slot machine building, and how to best utilize the space.

The design is perhaps the most controversial part. Many argue that in order to house the huge amount of slot machines planned to be in the establishment, the building will be a large monstrosity that blocks the view of the river, and wastes space. Also to take into consideration—all of the people coming to play the slot machines; where are they going to park! Concerns have been raised that the riverfront is valuable property, and none of the slot machine patrons will care enough to appreciate the view.

Some of these concerns have been taken into consideration in the building design. One design included elegant riverfront dining and a skating rink as a way to open up to the property to non slot machine players as well. The county has a lot to consider when they eventually choose the casino company that will build the slot machine complex—and they have made positive first steps by allowing everyone to air their issues up front.
