Massachusetts Senate Approves Slot Machines

The State of Massachusetts is in the news again with the Senate approving a bill that will bring 2,000 slot machines into four horse and dog racetracks. Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park is already in the planning stages for bringing the slot machines in, and does not want to lose a second of time pushing to make sure that the bill passes the house. If it passes, it would be one of four tracks allowed to operate the slot machines for a fee of $25 million if the house approves it. Gary Temple, of the Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park said, “We've lost 40 to 50 percent of our customer base due to the slot machine competition in Rhode Island -- not even considering Connecticut.” Which makes it all the more important that the bill pass.

However, he is on one side of the fence from another group that really does not want to see the bill pass, and they have geared up again to fight against the bill. The state may be bringing in and extra $300 million in tax revenues by approving the slot machines, but what about regulating the gambling as well as the loss to the state lottery system – how do these things factor in to the equation. Many feel that the extra income generated by the slot machines is really not enough to support all the problems it will eventually bring.
