Kansans Say No To Slot Machines

The Kansas State Legislature is considering a bill that would authorize the state to own and operate roughly 7,000 slot machines at privately held horse and dog race tracks. Senate bill 587 passed out of committee and is in the debate phase for the Senate. The problem with this is there is a group of Kansans against slot machines who really do not want to see the bill passed.

The group “Stand Up for Kansas” is a group from Wichita that has been fighting to keep the slot machines out since 1993. They feel that slot machines would be a detriment to the State of Kansas; they feel there is too much greed waiting to happen. The group is aware that the tracks support the bill as the slot machines are the perfect way to help the race tracks that have been bringing in less and less money. They know that the slot machines would increase revenues to the tracks, which have fallen from roughly $200 million to about $20 million.

They think that for those people who wouldn’t normally go to the horse or dog tracks, they would go to gamble on the slot machines, so it is the perfect way to bring in revenue, but at what cost?
