Battle at Gettysburg...Again

Conservation groups are up in arms at a proposal that would bring in gambling and slot machines roughly a little more than a mile from the Civil War battlefield in Pennsylvania. Development that has been proposed is one of the threats that endanger this historic site. There are 10 sites listed: Pennsylvania, Georgia, New Mexico, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Washington, D.C, which the Civil War Preservation Trust is trying to preserve. James Lighthizer says, “Hallowed ground, where more than 600,000 Americans gave their lives, is being paved over in favor of shopping malls, housing tracts and even gambling casinos," and slot machines; interestingly enough- many others feel the same way.

Some sites have already been damaged, such as the ones in the south that were subjected to Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina. Lack of money is another reason so many of them are in danger. The trust thinks neglect and public indifference are more reasons why many of the sites are in such disarray, with buildings falling down around them-- they don't think that gambling and slot machines are appropriate ways to bring in more money for the areas.

Chance Enterprises, a group of investors who are seeking a gambling license from the state of Pennsylvania, are accusing the trust of lying about their plans to revitalize the historic area, because they feel that they have known for over a year that this was their plan and yet Gettysburg just got boosted to the top of the list overnight. They think the group is just using this as a way to get themselves some additional funds from gambling and slot machines.
