The UK’s government is looking to strengthen and change the gambling rules to make them a little closer to the way the United States handles gambling. They are hoping to create a few small places, such as the US’s Atlantic City and Las Vegas, for people to travel to in order to gamble. They want to make Blackpool into one of these Mecca’s. The resort already has 5,000 slot machines – but they want to add more and this concerns a lot of people. They feel that this will only add to the 300,000 addicts that currently reside in the UK. They are worried that this will increase the number of addicts because they will be making special trips to go here – and won’t be doing anything other than gambling. Since slot machines are considered to be the most addictive form of gambling, people may be right. However, those pushing for it feel that this will help gamblers made better choices. They know that the US does not permit gambling in most places under the age of 18 or 21, and they are hoping to do something similar, with children under 18 no longer having access to the machines.
