Oregon Govenor vs Grand Ronde Tribe

See what running for re-election can do to a man? Oregon’s Governor, Ted Kulongoski, is running for re-election. The Warm Springs Tribe wants to build a casino, complete with slot machines, named Cascade Locks in the Columbia River Gorge. The Grande Ronde Tribe disagrees- they have their own slot machines and casino- and this is where it all falls apart.

The Governor gives permission to the Warm Springs Tribe; this of course angers the Grande Ronde Tribe as this then encroaches on their territory; the slot machines and casino will pull money out of their pockets. They then set up a marketing campaign against the Governor which they air anywhere that people might even be possibly looking. Thousands of dollars of negative advertising aimed at his re-election – things are not looking so good.

Then, very hush-hush, The Governor then signs a deal with the Grande Ronde Tribe to expand its slot machine business up to 33%. This means they will now be bringing in roughly $30 million more annually. Quite a deal, don’t you think? Not according to the Tribe, for two days after the deal is signed, they then invest another $200 thousand in more negative campaigning. Some people you just can’t make happy.
