The Pennsylvania State Harness Racing Commission has
its hands full with businesses filing applications to own one of fourteen
slot machines licenses. The problem isn’t necessarily with the filing, but
with the politics that seem to be running rampant over the process itself.
The process is confusing and seemingly slanted in a way that is a conundrum
to pretty much everyone.
Two companies apply for the last racing license available. This then makes
them both eligible for one of the aforementioned 14 slot licenses. The
Pennsylvania State Harness Racing Commission then rejected both of the
companies. However, the state court then requested the commission to look at
one of those businesses due to a complaint from said business. The other
business, rightfully so, then demands that the court give them both the same
courtesy and appeals the ruling. Since both companies are looking to build
the same business, in pretty much the same area, this only seems fair.
The Gaming Control Board, sick of the whole situation, then wonders why it
couldn’t just throw away the old process and just give them the slot license
without having the racing license. But guess what? They can! Turns out they
can do pretty much whatever they want due to a loophole previously written
into the process. Confusing enough for you?
