Cambell River Goes Gambling

British Columbia is now in on the plan for bringing gambling to small towns. Campbell River is ready with open arms. If approved, the town would get an influx of revenue totaling almost $900,000 per year. For a small town, needless to say, this is a huge amount of money. The town has decided to invest the funds into a fund that would then enable the township to make improvements in schools, organizations, public roads, etc. - money that just hasn’t been there before.

The town has already collected $1.3 million in property sales, which is already earmarked for the fund. Once the move is permanent, sometime by November, the town will have roughly 110 slot machines that will add to the money being collected from the land sales – and thereby increasing the amount of the fund itself. As word got out about the proposed gambling center, real-estate investors started showing an interest in the land, as well as where the machines would eventually be placed.

The town takes this all very seriously, and as a result has listed all of the pros and cons to the addition of the machines. The money will be a nice boost to their economy, but they have already taken note of the darker side of the gambling world as well. Fifty percent of the funds that are going into the town fund will be spend on creating and maintaining programs to help addictive gamblers within the town as well. The money will also be used to help with the homeless population, and in increasing the more financially strapped areas as well.
