Slot Machines Found in Former Mayor's California Home

It seems to be a trend in politics to get caught with illegal slot machines these days - Perhaps because slot machines are becoming prevalent in so many states, it seems to be easier for people to accept them as no big deal, and to have some slot machines of their own to play and socialize over. The latest in political slot machine faux pas is the confiscation of illegal gaming devices from the home of a former mayor of California City, Bell.

Seventy-four-year-old former Mayor of  Bell, California, Peter Werrlein Jr., was found with seven slot machines in his Running Springs Vacation Home, along with the making of an almost full out casino with a roulette table and card table as well. The discovery was made after deputies of the county's sheriff's department  arrived after there was a burglar alarm that went off at the former mayor's home on January 15th.

When they questioned him on the presence of the slot machines, he responded by telling them that they were his own personal property just being used for his own entertainment. However, the likelihood of anyone giving him the benefit of the doubt after he was sent to jail in 1985 for three years because of holding hidden interest in a poker casino named the California Bell Club, is highly unlikely. If he is convicted, he could spend six more months in jail and be forced to pay a $1,000 fine.
