| Massachusetts House to Vote on Slots Bill |
|---|
The Massachusetts House of Representatives will be voting on a bill to allow slot machines in the state in little over two week's time. Already passed by the state Senate nearly six months ago, the bill would allow greyhound and horse racetracks in Massachusetts to operate slot machines in their betting lobbies. The owners of these racetracks are keeping their fingers crossed, for they say that the introduction of slot machines would be great for business, and would help to create more jobs. George Carney - the owner of Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park - says that slot machines would help to create up to 500 new positions at his racetrack. Other supporters of slot machines in Massachusetts, like Representative David Flynn, are adamant the House should pass the bill. It seems that Massachusetts is throwing away millions in potential tax dollars, which adjacent states are taking advantage of. Massachusetts citizens definitely want slot machines, because they are obviously crossing state borders to play them. Although that is good enough reason to pass the bill for most, those who are not in support of slot machines, say that in addition to the social ills gambling causes, the people truly do not want slot machines in the state. According to a recent survey, it seems that Massachusetts residents prefer to not have slot machines nearby their homes and communities. As such, only a few counties are under consideration for allowing the machines. However, opponents of slot machines, such as Governor Mitt Romney, think that slots should not be permitted whatsoever. With the Senate's approval duly noted, the only roadblock to passing the bill would be a stubborn House Speaker, Sal DiMisi. If DiMisi remains neutral about the bill, its chances are very likely to get through into legislation.
