Tribal Slot Machines in California

There is certainly no doubting the fact that California’s tribes successfully operate their slot machines and casinos…to the tune of $13 billion per year in slot machine revenue. But that does not mean that all of the tribes in California are getting their fare share of the slot machines profits. For one small tribe, the Yurok, even getting approval to operate the slot machines in a small facility on their land seems daunting and impossible.

Other tribes in the state operate over a thousand slot machines—and they are constantly seeking the chance to bring in more slot machines. But for the Yurok tribe, the government just does not seem willing to approve the tiny facility they are requesting the right to open. Part of why they believe they should win approval of the measure stems from the fact that they have been both quiet and submissive with decisions in the past.

The Yurok tribe is already considered one of the poorest tribes in the U.S. and their tribal land is in a secluded area that you probably have never heard of and couldn’t find even if you had. The Yuroks lack jobs, education, and even the ability to get off of their lands sometimes. With the addition of the slot machines they have requested, this small tribe would have the resources for new schools, more food, and the much need job opportunities.
