Piggybacking Slot Machines

Slot machines are no new concept to Kansas—and the Kansas legislature has most certainly stood against the slot machines in the past decade, but this year, the slots could see a turn-around in their support because of the state lottery. The 2007 legislative session is set to begin soon and up for renewal this year is the state lottery bill.

There are definitely those trying to bring in the slot machines regardless of if it piggybacks on the lottery bill, but others feel that by piggybacking, the slot machines have a much stronger chance of passing this year. If the lottery and slot machines combined bill does not pass, then other bills will be proposed to the session.

Some of the promises the slot machines proponents are willing to make if the slots gain approval include revenue going toward the state Universities. Also, the slot machines could be used as a way to bring more business to racetracks—this includes more patrons and larger purses for the races.

Two of the slot machines supporters include Rep. Tom Burroughs and Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley. They are not the only supporters however. Burroughs has remarked that various counties in the state are already requesting that slot machines come to their communities.
