Residents in Berkeley County, West Virginia currently
feel like the slot machines and gambling legalized in the county have
already had negative effects on the county. And now the state is considering
expanding the offerings to include table gaming in addition to slot
machines.
As a preemptive strike against adding table gaming to the slot machines, a
town meeting was held to discuss the societal ills currently affecting the
town, and the potential ills adding more gambling could bring. Also
addressed was the issue of the number of slot machines now spreading
throughout their town and the state as a whole—they definitely want the slot
machines to stop spreading so rapidly.
The town spoke to delegate John Overington about how the ruling would affect
their counties, and if the counties would have the power to choose whether
or not to add in the table gaming. Also, they felt that the slot machines
parlors were located within mere miles of each other, and the county is not
seeing much in the way of revenue from the slot machines.
