For the residents of Maryland, the option of bringing
in slot machines could be a matter of paying even more taxes than they
already do, or legalizing slot machines as a way to bring in additional
revenue to the state’s budget. And it isn’t just the residents who think
this could be a good idea. Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller believes
that the slot machines are a viable alternative to levying additional taxes
on the residents.
Miller believes that the residents of Maryland already pay too much in
taxes, and he strongly believes that the state can come up with alternative
ways to support the state’s budget. But those “alternative ways” pretty much
center around legalizing slot machines and gambling in the state—which not
everyone aggress with.
When Maryland looks at other state’s, it is evident that the budget could
really benefit from the roughly $30 billion in yearly revenue the slot
machines bring. Miller focuses his argument on the fact that an astounding
number of Maryland residents leave the state to play the slot machines and
gamble—and Miller points out that that is money leaving the state.
The next step in the process though of bringing in the slot machines will
definitely center on gaining the support of Governor O’Malley. If he joins
the pro-slot machine debate the state could potentially have slot machines
legalized sometime this year.
