The Lowdown on Spokane's Slot Machines

Washington State recently received a tribal compact unlike all the other compacts the state has with the tribes regarding slot machines and gambling. The Spokane Tribe has never previously signed a tribal compact regarding slot machines and gambling with the state, but now they feel is an opportune time. The state has 27 other tribes who have all previously signed the tribal compacts that limit the number slot machines and the scope of gambling on the reservations.

The Spokane tribe though doesn’t like the terms of the current tribal compacts, and since they have never signed one before, they may be able to come to a very beneficial deal with the state—that is, if the other tribes don’t protest. Some of the terms of this newest proposed compact would give the Spokane Tribe more liberties regarding the slot machines and gambling that far surpass the liberties granted to the other tribes.

But on the other hand, the Spokane Tribe does not feel that it is asking any unheard of requests in the compact. The wish to more than double the current number of allowable slot machines at one casino—from 700 to 2,000 slot machines per casino. Then they want favorable terms for one main casino, and then other smaller ones. Specifically, 75 gaming tables at the larger casino and 50 tables at their other casinos. Then they propose a screening process for high rollers and the right to operate a high rollers gaming table at one of the casinos.

In addition to these requests, the tribe proposes bringing in 4,700 slot machines total to their reservation and they propose allow cash gambling at the slot machines rather than paper tickets and cards that the other tribes use.

For the tribe, though they realize that the other tribes do not have the same rights as their compact proposes, they do not feel the requests are out-of-line. They are merely looking to make their compact as advantageous as possible.
