A Debacle for Newport's Slot Machines

It seems that residents in most any town in the United States just have something against slot machines. Some towns cite traffic congestions, others crime, and still others cite the gambling addictions as reasons for the anti-slot machines attitudes. Some of those reasons are definitely valid to some degree, but as the Newport City Council, zoning issues always seem a safe bet for rejecting slot machines proposals.

According to the Newport Grande slot machines casino, they submitted a proposal to the Council requesting the right to both bring in more slot machines, and to add a hotel onto the facility. These seem like easy enough requests, but the City Council chose to reject Newport’s proposal on grounds that the casino wasn’t even zoned for slot machines, let alone an expansion of slot machines and an additional hotel.

But the Newport Grande is not convinced that that is the real reason their proposal was turned down, and they are pursuing legal action against the Council because of the injustices they felt were done to their slot machines proposal. The casino though, since the time of the first proposal, has changed their requests and now has a better chance at winning approval. Though they did not change the proposal for the sake of the Council, the Grande proposes to add fewer slot machines than initially asked for, and the hotel portion of the proposal has expanded and they are now planning a much larger facility.

The casino still plans to pursue the lawsuit, and the are still working on figuring out just how they are going to bring in hundreds of more slot machines to their casino by summer, with the full number of slot machines up and running in 2008.
