Texas' Steps to Slot Machines

It looks like Texas could be getting slot machines—and even if the slots opponents try to block the proposals, Texas now has two separate proposals for implementing slot machines in the state. Slots lobbyists argue that implementing Las Vegas slot machines will bring in up to $3.8 billion in revenue. This money can supplement the state’s higher education expenses and health insurance. So the proponents are pretty confident that the slot machines proposals may pass.

Texas has two choices for implementing the slot machines—the first proposal will bring slot machines all over the state. The proposal would allow gambling at casinos, Indian reservations, and at racetracks. The other proposal would bring in slot machines on a much smaller scale. Rather than huge Vegas-style slots casinos, slot machines would operate at the state’s dog and horse racetracks. This proposal argues that the racetracks need the revenue the slots would bring in as a way to compete with neighboring state’s racetracks.

The slot machines would not be the first type of gambling in the state. Texas legalized the state lottery in 1992—and this has proved beneficial for the state in terms of revenue. If the state approves one of the two slot machines proposals though, the revenue from the slots would very positively benefit the state’s scholarships and health care funding.
