There is no doubt about it, slot machines are quickly
spreading across the Northeast. Pennsylvania has joined the ranks as one of
the top states in that region for slot machine gaming. Currently, New York,
New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware operate slot machines, and now
Pennsylvania does as well. The only differences between the states’ slot
machines are the types of establishments. Pennsylvania and Delaware allow
slot machines at the pre-existing racetracks, while the other three states
have huge casinos and resorts that house their slot machines.
But now, only Pennsylvania will be home to the largest city in the country
operating slot machines. Once the two planned slot machines casinos opens,
Philadelphia will hold this illustrious title. But some wonder why the slot
machines are even operating in Philly considering that the city was founded
by the Quakers, whose beliefs are firmly against all form of gambling,
including slot machines.
But perhaps the answer lies in the government now running the city—both the
Governor and the Mayor are excited to see the slot machines aid the city
with revenue even if there is some opposition. The city’s mayor is perhaps
the most excited about the potential business the slot machines will bring
for the rest of the city. With the plans for an expansion to the convention
center in coming years, the possibilities for gambling are endless.
According to Philadelphia’s mayor, "If you want people to live in your city,
to live in your region, to bring their conventions here, to bring their
bodies here for vacation, you've got to have something for them. I want them
to look like casinos; I want them to feel like casinos. A real [slot
machines] casino with all of the opulence. I want to see a little neon."
