The dire predictions for the City of Langley, British
Columbia have not come to fruition yet. The opponents to the slot machines
being brought into the city were concerned that because of the lower income
levels in the town, many citizens may show increased signs of addictions to
the slot machines and gambling. But after a study by the Blue Thorn Research
and Analysis Group, it seems though slot machines concerns may have been
unfounded.
One Langley Cascades Casino opened for business, bringing slot machines and
table gaming to the community, the town quickly began to rally behind the
slot machines. Both Langley and Surrey have many slots supporters, so the
research group was brought in to investigate the cause. By looking at the
local residents, and also the socio-economic impact of slot machines and
gambling, the researchers came to a few startling conclusions.
The slot machines and gambling have not caused an increase in gambling and
slots addictions, even though slot machines are reported to be one of the
most addictive forms of gambling. Even more startling, however, the
researchers found that slot machine gambling addiction fell from where it
was at before the Langley Cascades Casino opened.
And as for Surrey, gambling addictions did increase by 0.4 percent—but in
their defense, three new locations for slot machines and gambling were
opened nearby.
