There are many in New Hampshire who are excited at the
prospect of slot machines finally coming into the state to provide revenue
and tourism, others though are bringing in the same debate every state has
to counter: crime and addictions. But with studies done on cites and
counties that bring in slot machines, it seems that often times the
allegations that slot machines immediately mean social ills are completely
unfounded, just look at Broward County, Florida, and Bangor, Maine. These
two areas have experienced minimal negative effects from the addition of
slot machines to the state.
But those in New Hampshire who are against the slot machines are firm in
their position that the slots just don’t belong in their state. But even
though they are against the slot machines, their toughest job is convincing
lawmakers and voters that the slot machines don’t belong. According to the
Executive Committee Chairman of the Granite State Coalition Against Expanded
Gambling, Jim Rubens, "This is the toughest year yet; the pincers have grown
tighter."
Part of the Coalition’s plans to educate citizens and rally against the slot
machines include an anti-slots rally and many guests ready to speak to the
ills the slot machines could bring. Included in these anti-slots speakers
are the Chief of Police and the Council of Churches. This rally will
thoroughly cover every aspect of the gaming and slot machines industry that
is negative and that could negatively affect the state.
