Iowa has had their fair share of problems regarding
slot machines recently with the TouchPlay debacle now behind them. Now
though it looks like several cities within the state are looking to the Iowa
Racing and Gaming Commission for slot machines approval. Previously, those
cities had looked to the state for slot machines approval—but since that
looked like a dead end, they are going straight to those with the power to
really decide if the slot machines should be brought into the state.
Notably for the slot machines proponents, they actually have some
substantial backing within the cities requesting slot machines. Ottumwa, one
of the three cities currently interested in the slot machines, has the
Wapello County Supervisor on their side. According to the Supervisor, Steve
Siegel, Ottumwa should be tops on the list of cities receiving slot machine
licenses if the Commission decides to issue additional licenses.
And even more in favor of Ottumwa Governor Chet Culver sides with the city,
and feels that they are a prime candidate for the slot machines. Now it’s
just a waiting game until Spring though to see how the Commission feels
about the slot machines license request from Ottumwa, Fort Dodge, and Tama.
According to the President of a group lobbying for the slot machines for
Tama, "At this point, we are going to follow the commission's lead. We feel
that the Legislature has already spoken to this issue [regarding the slot
machines]."
