It is not a matter of winning at the slot machines,
because that is certainly legal, but for McNaughton, the issue arises
because he did not choose to disclose is slot machines winnings on his
ethics forms, and now some believe he could have a conflict of interest.
When McNaughton applied for a position on the Pennsylvania Gaming Control
Board, there are certain steps to the application process that he had to go
through—and on perhaps one of the most important steps, McNaughton decided
to lie.
And McNaughton’s slot machines winnings aren’t just chump change. Over the
past two years he has won over $15,000. What really sticks is that had he
reported the slot machine winnings, he would not have been disqualified from
the position, they just needed him to be honest in his reports.
Further, McNaughton is an open opponent to slot machines. He has previously
been outspoken against bringing slot machines into Pennsylvania, and now it
is apparent that McNaughton does enjoy slot machines and gambling. And in
perhaps another conflict of interest, some of McNaughton’s gambling trips to
Atlantic City were in the company of Boyd Gaming (they were one of the
companies vying for a slots license).
