Dog breeders and racetrack owners at the pari-mutuels
in Broward County are still in debate about how the slot machines revenue is
used. The Florida Greyhound Association (FGA) and the breeders agree that
now that the county has slot machines, the casino are less willing to part
with the slot machines revenue than they promised when the machines were
brought into the county.
Currently, the revenue from the slot machines goes toward various entities
including the casino, county, state, and to the dog breeders. But according
to negotiations prior to instituting the slot machines, Jack Cory believes
that the slot machines are not holding up their end of the bargain in terms
of giving slots revenue to the dogs. Cory is a lobbyist for the FGA, and he
is going head-to-head with Dan Adkins, one of the main men who backed the
proposal to bring slot machines to Broward. Says Cory, “''Danny has gone
back on his word and not taken care of Greyhound breeders.'' Cory feels that
Adkins does not give enough money toward the purses for the races.
Adkins, on the other hand, stresses the fact that the slot machines are
already bringing in new business and clientele to the racetracks. Adkins has
no plan or desire to eliminate racing (according to Florida law he couldn’t
operate slot machines without having running races at the racino) he just
objects to the amount of money the FGA feels is appropriate.
