Where do all the Addicts Go?

In Pennsylvania, those suffering from gambling and slot machines additions just need to call a toll-free hotline to receive help—but not yet. Slot machines are already operating in the state, and the sate says that the system for the treatment and help of slot machines addictions is already in place. So the question is, why isn’t this system operating yet? The slot machines are up and running, so by law, so should the help hotline.

A couple of years back Pennsylvania decided to legalize slot machines within the state. And within that measure was also the stipulation that a system had to be designed and implemented to help compulsive gamblers. According to this measure, in addition to operating the slot machines, $1.5 million each year that the slot machines operated has to be spent aiding the treatment of addiction.

But before everyone believes the government is remiss in its duties to those addicted to slot machines and gambling, the Governor wants to stress that the system has been designed, but because of the slow start the slot machines have gotten off to, the hotline has yet to be fully operating. So far the Mohegan Sun has the only slot machines operating in the state, and the Governor claims that not enough revenue has come in from the slots to open the hotline though it is the next priority.
