Solicitation and Slot Machines

Slot machine opponents can now rest assured their predictions have come true, the slot machines have brought crime—but it sure did take awhile. Many slots opponents claimed Gulfstream Park would bring waves of crime because of the slot machines, but since its opening, this is the first linked incident.

According to Florida Law Enforcement, Sheena Marie Kline, 21, approached an undercover officer in the bar area of the slots parlor. Her arrest for misdemeanor solicitation came shortly after she offered the officer “straight sex” for $250. Then she got a felony charge for possession of a prescription painkiller when officers searched her purse.

Though this incident should not be considered lightly, many of the proponents wonder if this is the dreaded “societal ills” the opponents predicted the slots would bring. In 2005 Broward county approved legislation that would bring 1,500 slot machines to the county—and many predicted this decision would mean huge crime increases and problems within the county. But, according to the Florida Law Department Enforcement, Gulfstrea Park has operated its 516 slot machines in relative peace and quite. And once the other facilities open in the coming year, they predict similarly low crime rates for the slot machines facilities.
