There could be a whole new game in town for British
Bookmakers—and that new game is looking a lot like slot machines. The slot
machines type gaming machines resemble slot machines but that is where the
similarities seem to end. The new games could offer roulette-style gaming as
early as the beginning of the new year in shops. This isn’t a set-in-stone
plan yet though as the bookmakers are still encountering opposition from
Tanaiste and Misiter for Justice, Michael McDowell.
So for some it begs the question, what are these new machines, and why are
they cropping up in British Bookmakers? Basically they resemble slot
machines in appearance, and they are also fixed-odds betting terminals.
Basically the fixed-odds portion of the description refers to the payout
ratio—the machine payout based on the pre-determined and fixed odds.
The opposition to the machines is strong, and much of the debate revolves
around the usual issues that come up when slot machines are first introduced
into communities. Many fear the gambling addictions, occasional increases in
crime, and other social costs.
Many bookmakers are waiting before they purchase the machines—they want to
be sure that they will be legal before the expend the time, money, and
energy to bring slot machines into their shops.
Others are not quite so sure that adding to the racino would have a positive
impact on their community. Because the slot machines are so new, some
believe that the Corporation should give it more time before resorting to
such drastic measures. They are not eager to see the racino become a full-on
gambling casino.
