Slot Machines Bring Out Other Gambling

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation currently operates the Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre, and according to the Corporation, they are losing money even though the slot machines have been operating at the racetrack since the spring. They brought the slot machines in as a way to save the racetrack, but now they are saying that the slot machines alone are not bringing in enough revenue to sustain the racino.

The racino is planning on adding to their offerings which currently solely include slot machines in terms of gambling. Next on their list are card games such as blackjack and Texas Hold’em to name just a couple. They believe that there should be no real issue about adding the additional games to the existing slot machines as there are already casinos and establishments offering these type of games in the state.

Others are not quite so sure that adding to the racino would have a positive impact on their community. Because the slot machines are so new, some believe that the Corporation should give it more time before resorting to such drastic measures. They are not eager to see the racino become a full-on gambling casino.

According to the Provincial Treasurer Mitch Murphy, “We have nothing definitive at this stage, but I will say this, if you get out around the province there’s no secret lots of people are playing poker and table games in various establishments across the province.”

The owner of the Birmingham Race Course believed that the ruling could have a negative impact on the community. In Jefferson County, after the judge approved the MegaSweeps machines, many others across the county opened. Now with this new ruling, many may loose their jobs. McGregor said, “It appears that the Supreme Court concluded that our machines only had to resemble a slot machine in order to be a slot machine.”
