In the United States there is no doubt that slot
machines bring in the majority of gaming revenue for the majority of the
states in which they operate. But it seems like the slot machines in Ontario
are outshined by the lottery—the lottery by itself brings in millions more
than the slot machines alone.
This is not to say that the lottery is superior to the slot machines. The
other gambling at the casinos, such as table gaming, brings in roughly $1.6
billion in the 2004-2005 year. Slots topped that amount by bringing in $1.9
billion in revenue, and the lottery brought in the most with $2.3 billion in
ticket sales.
Regardless of which form of gambling brought in more revenue, it seems like
Ontario is doing well. The gaming and gambling revenue goes in large part to
government funded programs. A few of these programs benefiting from the slot
machines and lottery include: gambling and addiction centers, hospitals,
amateur athletes, and many more under-funded programs.
