Mohegan Trains Slot Machine Employees

Mohegan Sun did well when they made plans to open their slot machines in November, months ahead of the rest of the racetracks that were approved for the slot licenses. And though it wasn’t their main intention to open first—it surely didn’t hurt their opening day statistics. Players in Pennsylvania were so happy to have slot machines in the state, they came out in droves to support the Mohegan Sun—and to try their hand at the slot machines.

In anticipation of opening, Mohegan has spent the last month prepping their employees for the slot machines. Mohegan hired 465 employees to maintain operations on the 1,100 slot machines—but they will be hiring more when the rest of their slot machines arrive. Mohegan’s temporary facility will hold 3,500 slot machines—which will hold them over nicely until the larger, permanent facility opens in mid-2008.

The employees were trained on the whole gambit of slot machine related jobs—they have to know how to clean out the machines, empty the change, and have a general knowledge about each of the different slot machines in their facility so they can help patrons and answer any questions they might have.

Pennsylvania approved 14 slot machine facilities across the state, and though Mohegan is the first to open, they are not alone. By the end of next year, six of the other racetracks anticipate opening with the rest opening in the following years.

According to Jim Wise, the Vice President of Marketing for the Mohegan, “It’s always great to be first. That’s something no one can take away from you.”
