It looks like Florida may have to wait just a little
longer for the second slot machines facility to open in the state.
Gulfstream Park opened its doors last month, and Mardi Gras Racetrack and
Gaming Center were hoping to have their slot machines operating by the first
of the year—which just doesn’t look like it is going to happen now that they
have failed one of the states tests/inspections on the slot machines and the
facility.
Since Class III slot machines are new to the state, they say it is
understandable that some of the newer facilities might not pass the test the
first time around. Before any gaming centers can open in the state both the
Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Florida Department of
Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) must examine the new facility
from head to toe. The test on the slot machines and facility can take as
long as one whole business day because of how thorough the two Departments
check the facility. They are checking to ensure that all of the facility
meets requirements set by the state, and that all of the facility’s
employees thoroughly understand their job descriptions.
It is helpful to note though that even Gulfstream Park did not pass its
first test—but they were successful the second time around and their slot
machines were up and running in no time. It is expected that the Mardi
Gras’s slot machines will also pass the test within a few weeks and then the
racetrack will be in the clear to open for business to the public.
