For the last year Pennsylvania has made headlines in
the slot machines industry as the Pennsylvania Gaming and Control Board
spent thousands of man-hours listening to pitches, reading proposals and
debating just exactly which of the locations to award slots licenses to in
the state. Over the past twelve months they have awarded all but two of the
slot machine licenses—and now the final locations will put forth their last
effort to secure the slot machines.
Already the state has begun operating the slot machines at the Mohegan Sun,
and others are quickly following suit to put up temporary slot machines and
facilities in an effort to begin cashing in on the roughly $3 billion slots
industry. Now the state regulators have three possibilities left and only
two licenses to award. In the final running are: Allentown, Bethlehem, and
the Poconos. The state regulators have already looked at the paperwork filed
by the three candidates, and now comes down to the final pitches they will
present on Monday.
So far there is no real indication as to who the board will pick for the
final two licenses. Many speculate that Bethlehem and the Mt. Airy Resort
are the front runners for the slot machines because of their location and
proximity to other cities and slots parlors—but the board hasn’t commented
on a favored location. They do though acknowledge that this has been a long
and detailed process, that is thankfully nearing its completion.
According to the Gaming and Control Boards license manager, Sean Hannon, ''A
lot has led up to this month. I know my usual day is 11 hours, and I don't
know anyone who isn't working weekends. When [the license process] is
finally over, I think there will be a big celebration around here.''
