What Will the Interior do with the Slot Machines?

Negotiations between the state of Florida and the Seminole Indian tribe concerning the slot machines are basically completely stalled—as in they just aren’t progressing as neither side is willing to give up what they feel is fair. Each side has one major point that they feel is immovable—and that means that for long-term resolution on the slot machines, the Department of the Interior has been called in to resolve the issues. But that doesn’t mean that is the ideal situation, the interior is urging the two sides to come to terms regarding the slot machines because they aren’t going to guarantee favorable terms to either the state government or the tribes.

The tribe won’t agree to limit the number of slot machines in the facility they have already opened against the wishes of the state. The state is concerned that their slot machines facility is on environmentally delicate land and could further endanger indigenous animals. A few of the other points of issue deal with how late the facility can stay open, the state wants a portion of the slot machines revenue, and the state also wants to bring legislators in on the slot machines debate.

And though the department isn’t promising to show favor on either side because they do want the tribe and the state to work the issue out themselves, they have already outlined what their proposed legislation will be. Once the federal government steps in the state will loose any claims to slots revenue and the Interior will grant the tribe permission to operate the Class III slot machines. Also, the Interior plans to allow the highly debated Big Cypress Casino to stay open 24/7—regardless of the damage it could cause to the Everglades. And they are adding a stipulation about the payout percentage—it has to be at least 75%.

The state of Florida is not happy about these terms and Jeb’s office will fight the federal regulations in court if they come to pass.
