So the truth of the slot machines situation is this: if
you play the slots you will loose money. If you play the penny slots or the
quarter slots, or even the five dollar slots, the slot machines are designed
payout less money than you put—that is just a simple fact. But what some
players don’t understand is that while you will statistically loose money,
the type of slot machines you play could payoff more if you hit a jackpot.
Playing the penny or nickel slot machines seems like a better deal—you can
sit at the machines for longer without sending all of your coins so you must
have a better chance at hitting the jackpot right? Well consider that the
machines hold a percentage of every dollar played in the slot machines. The
inverse of this of course is the payout percentage you hear about—how much
do the slot machines give back. So consider that the law of averages says
that you will lose the hold—even on the penny and nickel slots. So in
numbers terms: if the casino holds 10 percent, and you play a thousand
dollars, you will lose on average $100 dollars—and this includes jackpots
that you may win.
Then, and it can’t be emphasized enough, the payout percentages and the
holds are calculated across thousands of spins—so even though you
technically are only supposed to lose 10 percent to the slot machines, that
is an average, and you could be the unlucky player that loses much more than
that!
