Pennsylvania’s Slot Machines Give Revenue to Horse Racing

The horse racing industry in Pennsylvania could see a major turn around in their horse races now that the slot machines are opening across the state. According to the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Development and Gaming Act part of the slot machines revenue goes toward the horse racing industry. And now the agreement between the slot machines casinos and the horse racing industry could go beyond the Act to include partnerships between racetracks and casinos.

Right now the provision within the act stipulate that 12 percent of gross slot machines revenue goes toward purses and breed development—and that is just from the slot machines that operate in conjunction with racetracks. Non-track slot machines give six percent to the horse racing industry.

Specifically, Presque Isle Downs will be using the combination of slot machines and horse racing as a way to usher in the new slot machines they plan to open late 2007. The inaugural season at the racetrack will offer what they term “25 Nights of Thoroughbred Racing.” They plan on using the slot machines to accrue larger purses for the track—and in that first 25 nights, MTR Gaming (owners of the track) believes they will be able to offer purses of roughly $200,000 per night.
