Now that Prop B was voted down by voters just last
month, the new initiative, The Better Jobs for Guam Act is offering citizens
of Guam a lot more in terms of incentives the slot machines revenue will
bring into the community and bring to the government. Last time the
percentage going to the state from the slot machines revenue was on the low
side compared to what many casinos payout to states within the United
State—now though it looks like the slot machines could bring a lot more to
Guam.
Below let’s look at what the new Act will give back to Guam if the slot
machines are legalized at the pari-mutuel betting facility, the Guam
Greyhound Raceway.
New Jobs
The slot machines would bring in 450 new jobs to the area in the first year
alone. The jobs are also considered “better” than many jobs in the area
because they will pay at minimum 50 percent more than the current minimum
wage.
Economic Growth
Just like the Prop B campaign stressed, the slot machines will bring more
tourism to Guam—which will in turn benefit all of the other businesses on
the island. The entire economic climate will be positively impacted by the
increase in tourism and the additional hotels, restaurants and shops that
the tourists will need to come to the island.
Healthcare
This new slot machines measure proposes to finance from the revenue
off-island medical care for at least 100 patients—this includes the
round-trip airfare to the off-island facility. Also, 500 local residents a
year will get up to $500 to use for dental care.
Education
The measure will also annually contribute at minimum $100,000 to the
education system to enable them to purchase textbooks for students. The
slots revenue will also provide two hundred $2,500 scholarships for
students. Additionally, they will support the music and drama programs at
the schools with $5,000 annually donated to the schools.
Additionally, the measure proposes $10,000 to go to village mayors and
$100,000 in sponsorship of sports teams.
