Could Alcohol and Slot Machines Spell Trouble?

Not only has Pennsylvania approved slot machines in the state, but now they also legalized drinking for free while players are gambling. It seems like the slot machines are getting VIP treatment though because currently in the state, the race tracks are forbidden to serve free drinks to the patrons, even if they are betting on the races. Now however, as the first slot machines begin operations, the government decided that if a patron is physically in their chair playing the slot machines they may receive drinks all night long.

And that may seem a little alarming—and rightly so. The casinos will not be open 24 hours, rather they will operate for 19 hours a day—7 am until 2 am. That means that players can receive the free drinks from 7 am until close as long as they are playing the slot machines. What the casinos will end up with is debatable to most. Many look at Las Vegas as the shining example of how to effectively operate slot machines, others though think that the difference in setting give cause for different protocol. The Vegas slot machines, which operate 24 hours a day and give free drinks as long as players are gambling, do not see a significant problem with allowing the free flowing alcohol.

The slot machines opponents believe this latest legislation is jus the icing on the cake. Now, they believe the state will see a dramatic increase in gambling problems as a result of the mix between severe intoxication and gambling. They believe that because of the impaired judgment associated with alcohol, players will play a dangerous game if the become too intoxicated to accurately judge when they have crossed the line in terms of gambling for the evening.
