A Sound Defeat for Ohio Slot Machines

Though many were sure the initiative would pass, Issue 3, seeking approval for slot machines in the state suffered a clear defeat at the elections earlier in the month. And the slot machines aren’t the only surprise decision by Ohio voters, Democrats were voted into the key seats. For Ohio, the state that showed great support for voting President Bush into office, they have now voted their first Democratic Governor in over ten years, US Rep Ted Strickland.

The Issue 3 was pretty well known throughout the state and was one of the more controversial issues facing Ohio voters at the polls this year. The Learn and Earn campaign would have allowed 30 percent the revenue from slot machines support higher education scholarships. Many of the parents approved the slot machines purely for the support it would give to them as they tried pay the rising tuition costs at the state’s public universities.

Some say that perhaps the reason the slot machines didn’t pass dealt with the large amount of revenue that wasn’t going to the scholarship fund. Many felt that giving only 30 percent was much too low considering the entire reason for legalizing was reportedly for the scholarships. Beyond just those negatives, like other states, Ohio feared that the number of gambling addictions and the increase in crime were reason enough to not pass the initiative, the negative effects just did not counter the positive. slot machines
