Other states are doing it, but Nevada has held out.
Long looked at as the leader in the slot machine industry, new legislation
in Nevada could ban smoking in the slot machine casinos. But for many, they
don’t quite understand—slot machines and smoking go just as hand-in-hand as
smoking while you drink. It seems though that the out-of-state-ers have a
problem with the smoking in the casinos.
Basically, other states are increasingly passing legislation that limits the
public places where smoking is permitted—then, those residents come to Las
Vegas to play the slot machines, and they complain because the same state
laws do not apply. Now that the state has had enough negative feedback,
voters have the chance to pass one of three options, all related to the
smoking in slot machines casinos.
Option one will ban smoking in certain areas of the slot machine casino.
Option two would not affect smoking in the slot machine casinos. And as a
third choice, voters can choose to leave the law as it is, and not change
any smoking regulations.
And for those who scoff at the issue, consider that Nevada has the highest
incidents of lung cancer mortality in the United States. This fact alone
demonstrates that there is a real issue here that needs a solution. Even if
the current options aren’t the end solution, this is definitely an area that
deserves another look.
Beyond just smoking around the slot machines, the real concerns arise when
you look at the smoking inside of daycare centers, school busses, and other
places where children are essentially trapped with the second hand smoke. So
though the slot machines are a concern, and some employees at the casinos
say they would even prefer if no smoking was permitted near the slot
machines, it’s much more a concern when you look at what the smoking does to
the children.
