Slot Machines Revitalize County

Monroe County could get slot machines as early as Fall 2007; the question still remains though, which casino will get the stand alone slot machine license? It looks like the slot machine licensing board will decide in December whether Mt. Airy or Pocono Manor will operate with a stand alone slot machine license. Either business will benefit the local economy and support tourism, so either way Monroe County will see the positive effects of the slot machine revenue.

The Mount Airy Resort and Casino anticipates receiving the slot machines in December and opening a brand new resort and casino, complete with 3,000 slot machines in late fall of 2007. Anticipation of the slot machine license prompted Mt. Airy to demolish the old Mt. Airy lodge—construction on the new resort and casino will begin as soon as the stand alone slot machine license is approved. Mt. Airy believes slots approval will boost their presence in the Pocono’s while adding to the local community.

Pocono Manor differs from Mt. Airy mainly due to the fact that Mt. Airy isn’t as established and well-known as Pocono Manor and the Manor has maintained a presence in the Pocono’s since 1902. Pocono Manor anticipates using the stand alone slot machine license on a slightly grander scale than Mt. Airy. Pocono Manor will keep the existing facility however they will expand on the structure to include restaurants, sporting area, a hotel, convention center and more. Rather than the 3,000 slot machines of Mt. Airy, Pocono Manor plans 5,000 slot machines after the renovations are complete. The downside of Pocono Manor receiving the stand alone slot machine license—the renovations and new facility will not be open to the public for approximately two years.
