Slot Machines Divide Two Counties

Slot machine revenue in Fayette County is high, and the county recognizes that neighboring Greene County could really benefit from some of the slot machine revenue since its citizens are affected by the slot machines too. But as neighborly as Fayette county was willing to be, William DeWesse, the House Democratic Leader, added a provision to the distribution of slot machine funds that forces Fayette County’s slot machines revenue to be split in half, 50 percent to each county. This new provision angers some residents and county officials who were not originally told they would be giving away that much of the slots revenue.

If DeWesse’s provision passes, Fayette County will be looking at $279,000 a year in slot machine revenue rather than the anticipated $548,000 a year. This is based off of the 500 slot machines operating in Fayette. Many feel the provision is going to pass as a result of DeWesse’s majority of voters in Greene County—which is looked at as unfair for Fayette County. Fayette County feels that they are getting the short end of the stick.

The most confusing part of this whole situation is why Fayette County is specifically targeted. Neighboring county, Washington County, also operates a slot machine casino however, none of the slot machine revenue from Washington County is affected. Unlike the Meadows in Washington County, the Fayette’s slot machine facility, Nemocolin Woodlands Resort & Spa will be directly affected by the new provision. Basically because the decision seems a tad arbitrary to the citizens in Fayette, DeWesse can expect a lower vote in that county.
